Exactly one year ago, I released my first book, The Intimacy of Race, on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day. In the book, I share the story of my dad, who was chosen to guard Dr. King on his visit to my hometown of Paterson, NJ in March of 1968. He was chosen, not because he was a stellar police officer, but because the Chief of Police did not want any white officers in harm’s way, due to the death threats against Dr. King. He was assassinated one week after this photo of my dad and Dr. King was taken.

Violence happens to this day when white supremacy is threatened. We see it in many forms and its disguise is being revealed. On this day, honoring Dr. King’s birth, I reflect on the bravery, resilience, and consistency in which he shared his message of peace, love, and equality.
