Whether you're leading a team or leading a family, influence isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room, it’s
about creating space for connection, mutual respect, and emotional safety, even when you disagree. Here's how to lead through political tension this holiday season with empathy, clarity, and strength.
1. Decide Who You Want to Be Before You Walk In
Before you even set foot in the family gathering, ask yourself: Who do I want to be in this space? Not what do I want to say, but how do I
want to show up? Ground yourself in your values, calm, courage, compassion, respect. Set your emotional intention before the conversation begins. For me, a 2–3-minute release meditation works. I can send you the link to one if you reply to this email.
2. Be Curious, Not Combative
When someone expresses a view that clashes with yours, instead of reacting, try responding with curiosity:
- “That’s interesting, can you tell me more about why you see it that way?”
- “What experiences have shaped that perspective for you?”
This doesn’t mean you’re endorsing their view, it means you’re modeling what real listening looks like. Works better than calling them an idiot and, it also helps you to know what’s really important to them under the surface.
Hear them and also help them understand you more by sharing why you see things differently.
3. Set Boundaries with Grace, Not Guilt
You are allowed to set boundaries with family. If you know certain topics create emotional landmines, speak up in advance or in the moment:
- “I’d really love to focus on connecting this holiday without diving into politics. Can we agree to give that topic a rest today?”
Setting boundaries is not about avoidance, it’s about protecting peace and emotional safety.
Being a powerful leader isn’t just about how you perform professionally; it’s about how you manage pressure, conflict, and complexity at home too. The same skills you use to navigate executive boardrooms with clarity, emotional regulation, active listening, are the same skills
that foster deeper, healthier connections with the people closest to you.
If you’re ready to lead more powerfully in every area of your life, let’s talk.
Whether you’re navigating leadership challenges, strained relationships, or the emotional toll of being the “strong one,” I offer transformational strategies that create results without sacrificing your mental well-being.
