Ever since I was a young child, I’ve been obsessed with I Love Lucy, the famous TV show
from the 1950’s. To this day, I will watch clips and reruns that are just as funny today as they were 70+ years ago. Pure comedic entertainment, when you overlook the gender roles of the man being the breadwinner and the woman being the housewife.
What I find fascinating about the real-life husband and wife team of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz is the business that they built together so that they could save their marriage and how they fought for and won many of the innovative things that they wanted to do with this new medium of television and the cultural stereotyping he faced as a Cuban immigrant.
It was groundbreaking stuff at the time, from how they recorded their show on film so that they could own the material and continue to sell the show (hello residuals from reruns), to how they
fought the studio execs who said that no one would believe that they were a couple on TV, even though they were a couple in real life, because Desi was Cuban. Not to mention the flak he constantly took for his accent.
I chose to read this book on my European travels because I love real-life stories and it’s good for me to take a break from all the personal development and skill building stuff that I read all year long. And, I Love Lucy! What do you read for fun?
