Growing up a baseball fan in the NY/NJ area, I was never a Yankee fan. I was a die-hard NY Mets fan my entire life, so imagine my surprise when my first child, who was born that great year of the 1986 NY
Mets, became a die-hard Yankee fan. I still don’t know how that happened.
I have, however, always thought fondly of Yogi Berra, especially his “Yogi-isms .”He seemed so sweet and innocently adorable in his use of the English language. So when I saw a documentary about him on my recent flight to DC, I just had to watch it.
I was blown away by what this man has accomplished, not only in his life and career
but who he was as a person, from how he welcomed Jackie Robinson into the major leagues and his kindness towards Larry Doby (one of the first Blacks to play in the major leagues and from my hometown of Paterson, NJ), to his later allyship with the LGBTQ+ community.
Learning about this great athlete as a human being left me with tears in my eyes. I have such deep gratitude for those folks in positions of privilege who showed kindness and support during those early
times of integration. It’s a cool portrait of a really lovely human being.
