I felt like giving up again

Hey ,

I don't know why but I always seem to get life lessons from the simple act of having a manicure. Now if you read any of my emails in the past, you might have noticed one or two about my experience with my nails. Part of how I present, part of my brand, is having manicured hands.

I've talked about this in the past when I was being wheeled out by paramedics into an ambulance and one of the paramedics commented on my manicure. I've talked about the bravery it took for me to change the shape of my nails after 20 some odd years and taking that leap to try something new. I've also talked about experimenting with colors that were outside of my comfort zone.

This is what I want to share with you today. I wanted a particular type of nail polish on my nails as I embark on my trip to Europe for the summer. I thought I had done really well. I picked out the two colors I wanted blended. Everything was just right. I didn't schedule enough time for her to do the type of design I wanted but I called ahead and they told me it would be no problem. She could do it.

Off we go until she puts on the color and finds out that it's not working. At least it's not working the way I had shown her in the photo of how I wanted it to look. We kept trying color combinations, whether it was the white part, whether it was the pink part. They all had a little sparkle, all the things.

Now I have two women looking at my nails trying to make this work. For a brief moment I felt guilty for taking up time for them to get my nails exactly the way we were both happy with. I almost said, "Forget it, let's just go with a simple base of color and I'll be on my way." Almost. I thought about it. I pay a lot of money for my manicures. It's my guilty pleasure. I didn't want to go away for three weeks without my nails looking a certain way.

Honestly I thought about my value. I actually thought about how many times I give up or acquiesce or give in when things get hard. This combination of nail color was proven to be challenging and I was falling back into my own pattern, a habit of giving in and giving up and not wanting to take up space or time.

I had a little mini conversation with myself at this point and I was just, "Let's just go with it and see what it looks like. Try it, see if it works. Make the decision and make it right. Make it work in your mind, make it work on your hands. Do whatever buffing or muting of the colors that she has to do to make it work."

Then I said, “I trust you. You pick something to make it work." I moved from giving up to collaborating and trusting the person I was collaborating with, who was way more knowledgeable than me, mind you. They never asked me to give up or just go with a single color. I was the one putting that retreat upon myself.

I started to feel guilty for taking up space, taking up air, taking up time, and how many times do we do this in life? I know that I have a pattern: the first thing I want to do is give up when things get hard. I know enough about myself and the pattern that I have to not pay attention to it. What I mean by that is I recognize the pattern and I make a conscious choice to go in the other direction of the pattern. I am tenacious. I am disciplined. Well let me say it this way: I want to be the type of person who doesn't give up easily, who gives up only after everything has been exhausted and then I know that I gave it my all. Instinctually I always want to give up too soon. It's a pattern that I have.

We all have different habits, patterns, and behaviors that we learned from our early life experiences. I know mine came from that because I was surrounded by people who actually encouraged me to give up when things got hard and that became a part of my DNA. My point in sharing that with you is that those patterns, beliefs, and behaviors from our early life experiences can sabotage our success in life.

Those patterns decide how hard you fight for the promotion, the boundary, the marriage, the dreams, and the things you actually want.

Pro tip: 3 steps to interrupt the sabotaging pattern

Notice it. Catch the urge to quit or shrink the moment it shows up.
Name it as the old pattern, not the truth.
Do the opposite of what it's telling you. Shift away from the sabotaging behavior.

By the way, my manicure came out so good that she was taking pictures for her portfolio. Success was had by all. It’s called ombre I’m told. What do you think?

Before I head out to my annual adventure in Berlin

Summer is officially here. Time to rest, reset, and hopefully find a whole lot of joy in the doing.

If you have been in my world for any length of time, you know I disappear to Berlin for three to five weeks every summer. My husband is German, his whole family is still there, and his mom just turned 90 this year. So I am packing my bags shortly to go be with them. (We are sneaking off to Prague for a weekend too.)

Before I go, I want to share some of what occupied my time this month.

"Earth, Wind & Fire (to Be Celestial vs. That’s the Weight of the World),” by Ahmir (Questlove) Thompson on HBO

Earth, Wind & Fire was the soundtrack of my youth. Their music is still on my playlist for my morning walk. Recently my daughter treated me to a concert they gave here in Berkeley. It was not the OGs, but the whole room was feeling that 1970s funk again.

The documentary centers on Maurice White, the founder, and it is part his story, part the band's. What got me was how spiritual he was (hence the name), and how the music grew right out of that. I have sung those lyrics my whole life and never once stopped to notice how much positivity and joy was built into them. Turns out that was on purpose. He was deeply into affirmations and manifestation, and you can hear it in the sound. It left me wanting to be more consistent with my own journaling and affirmations.

People Magazine

I have been a People magazine subscriber for close to 30 years. The fashion, the recipes, the Hollywood stories, the true crime, the brain teasers, the feel-good stuff. It has been my bedtime ritual for as long as I can remember.

A couple of months ago, one story stopped me cold. Cara Ryan, a 36-year-old teacher, was diagnosed with a 2.15-inch tumor in her cervix and needed a radical hysterectomy, all because she kept putting off a checkup out of embarrassment. She had symptoms. She knew something was wrong. But she went down the rabbit hole of self-diagnosing instead of booking the pap smear that eventually caught the cancer and saved her life. By then it had already spread.

It is the embarrassment part that stays with me. Something I always say is that we do not need more courage, we need to get over our fear of embarrassment. I even wrote a blog about it a few years back. Fear of embarrassment is what kept me from learning to ride a bike as an adult. Sure, I was scared of falling. But I was more worried about what the neighborhood kids would think of a grown-axx woman wobbling around on two wheels.

That fear kept me from something most people learn before they are old enough to even feel embarrassed. And that same fear is keeping you from something too. For Cara, it was a pap smear. For me, a bike. What is it for you?

It is a book about the courage and resilience of Afghan women and men. For those of us in North America who have only ever known true freedom, freedom of choice, and freedom of thought, it is a gut-check. What we take for granted is not a given in most of the world.

And with the United States marking 250 years of independence next week, it is a timely reminder not to hold those freedoms lightly. Our country is far from perfect, but we have basic freedoms a lot of people never get to know.

My First Crush…My Dad ❤️

Hey ,

Like most little girls, my dad was the first man I ever fell in love with.

I am happy to say I still have him with me, alive today at 93, going on 94.

I know not everyone can say that. Some of you had a father who wasn't present. Some of you have already said goodbye. Some of you never knew your father at all.

I have always been blessed to have my dad in my life.

I have had most of today to sit with what Father's Day means now that Dad is at this age and has dementia and here is where I am now.

I am his caregiver. The one who makes sure his bills are paid, that he's fed, that his house is clean, that he makes it to his doctor's appointments.

All the things you do as an only child caring for an elderly parent.

From 3,000 miles away.

It is an interesting position to be in, especially considering some of the daddy drama in my history.

When I look back, I remember the times my father wasn't around. The times he was too busy. The times he wasn't kind to my mother. I witnessed a lot that had me feeling a certain way about my dad. I wanted and I needed more.

And now, I'm the one who gets to be around for him. Ironic, isn't it.

And I also get to look at the sacrifices he made for me.

How hard he worked so I could go to private school. How he made sure I had a roof over my head, clean clothes, food on the table.

They sort of balance each other out. Don't they?

Here is the one thing that stands out for me today as I am looking at this through very mature eyes, even though I am still his little girl.

Our parents did the best they could with the tools they had.

Children don't come with instruction manuals. There is no psychiatrist, no pediatrician following you around for years telling you what to do and how to do it.

That truth made me appreciative. For what I have. For the experiences I did have with my dad. For what it's worth, him not being around much made the times I did have with him stand out in my memory.

So wherever you land with your own father, good, bad, complicated, or somewhere in between, look for the good you can pull out of that relationship.

Have compassion for the man who did the best he could with what he had.

And to all the dads out there with a heart to do their best, we are cheering you on.

We love you. We appreciate you.

This is embarrassing…

Today is Juneteenth. That’s not the embarrassing part. I’m embarrassed to say that I never even heard of Juneteenth until I moved to Berkeley, CA more than 20 years ago.

I went to all or mostly white, Catholic Schools, through high school. Then college was specialized for dental hygiene. Again, all white.

When I first heard of Juneteenth, I thought it was a fancy way of saying June thirteenth. So, I did what I always do when I hear of something for the first time. I Googled it. And, that’s when I discovered the meaning and significance of Juneteenth.

I’m not sharing this to give you a Juneteenth lesson right now. You can Google it too if you don’t know.

What I have done and have been doing to close the gap between the history I was taught in school and the history that wasn’t taught in school, is dive into learning.

Part of my learning also involves teaching.

Since I’ve been speaking, teaching and coaching on the subject of DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging) back when it was allowed, I realized that unless this type of training was offered by organizations, most people didn’t have access to it.

Their Story Can Inspire All of Us

As someone raised in the NY/NJ area, I grew up as a Knick fan. Now that I’m in the SF Bay Area, I can’t help but love me some Warriors.

But let’s talk about the NY Knicks for a sec.

The last time they won the NBA Championship was in 1973… I was 12. (No need to do the math)

I remember Walt Frazier, one of the players, making an appearance at a local mall, after the championship, and my mother and I went to get his autograph. She was absolutely giddy. I had a little schoolgirl crush. Everyone was ready for the repeat that never happened.

Fast forward to my first date with my husband in 2002. Yes, it was a Knick game. Even though they hadn’t won a championship since 1973, Knicks tickets were still a coveted item. The love that New Yorkers have for this team endured many years of heartbreak and letdowns.

Knick fans never wavered in their support. I, however, tend to waver and get extremely impatient.

When I moved to California in 2005, I slowly built an allegiance to the Warriors. They were young, cute and fun to watch. And they couldn’t seem to lose. Until they did, and then I wavered and stopped following as closely.

This year the Knicks became the talk of the season and suddenly, I was watching basketball again, because hey, once a New York fan, always a New York fan. I had just gone dormant and I didn’t know any of this generation of players anyway.

Well, I decided to dive in and learn because they were on their playoff winning streak. And, since I’m from the ‘back in my day’ generation of fandom, I was impressed with these young men.

To me, they seem like a genuinely nice group of young men that are tightly bonded and had really learned to work together as a team… and not waver in their belief or support.

So, unless you really have zero interest in sports and don’t read, watch, or listen to current events, you probably know by now that in game 4 against the San Antonio Spurs, the Knicks had the biggest comeback in NBA finals history, overcoming a 29 point deficit, and literally winning in the last seconds of the game. Even the die-hard, unwavering fans didn’t think they could do it. But the team did not give up on themselves.

Now, we can go through all of the obvious clichés about it not being over until…or, never give up on your dreams, or it ain’t over ‘til it’s over. Yada yada.

But that win inspired me to look at things I had given up or wavered on and rekindle my can-do attitude regardless of what anyone says I can or cannot do.

I was still feeling the inspiration from that comeback on Saturday. Before game 5, I attended a speaker training earlier in the day and I learned of a team building exercise called the Desert Survival Situation. Basically, a group has to work together to survive a plane crash in the desert. Participants must first rank the salvaged items needed for survival alone, then work in groups to see if working together to solve problems beat out working alone.

Results usually are, working solo you die; working with a team you live.

That was the lesson for me watching the Knicks in game 5 on Saturday. Again, they came back from 16 points down to winning the championship with minutes left in the last quarter. It was the team. Not just the execution of the skills, because honestly, to get that many points down in both games, those skills took a while to come together.

It was their unwavering belief in their ability to figure it out and get it done. The true definition of confidence.

There are many lessons to be gleaned from their collective story and their individual stories. But my invitation to you is to look at your own life.

Where are you struggling, trying to figure out what you need to survive on your own? That increases your chances of dying.

I almost let the vet have it today

Hi ,

I have to work really hard at not being a jerk sometimes.

Like when I recently took my dog to the vet for her annual exam..

I get disappointed and angry when things don't go my way, like when people let me down, or when other people's mistakes cost me time or money, or both. In the past, that has made me snippy, sarcastic, and not very nice.

So here is what happened.

When I took my dog Lexi in for a visit, the doctor ran a test I did not give permission for. When the receptionist read me the itemized bill, I caught the charge. She called the doctor on the intercom and the doctor claimed that I gave her permission.

She had not.

The old me would have gone full belligerent attitude right there at the front desk and tried to fight it. The other option would be to swallow it and let it slide, which was also tempting, because honestly, who has the energy.

I did neither.

I asked to speak with the doctor. She came out and after we reviewed our conversation, she admitted that she had ASSUMED I would approve the test. Together, we made a plan to prevent it from happening again at Lexi's next visit. No voices were raised. No one was blamed. I thanked the receptionist, inquired about where she got her eyebrows done, paid my bill, and left.

That was it.

E + R = R.

Event plus Reaction/Response equals Results. We do not get to pick the event. We always get to choose how to respond versus react.

That choice is the only thing standing between us and the result we actually want.

I know what my reaction patterns are. And I know why I have them. And knowing them has allowed me to choose responsibly.

The vet running a test I did not approve? Expectation broken. Cue the anger.

Knowing that about myself is the difference between reacting from old programming and choosing differently in the moment.

Most of us were never modeled how to handle big feelings in childhood. So we default to whatever pattern we picked up watching the adults around us. Snippy. Silent. Explosive. Avoidant. Take your pick.

Those patterns are not your personality. They are programming.
